After a hard week of training with the Americans I needed both a mental and physical break before making my final JWOC preparations.
I used this time to visit a few friends in Helsinki who were kind enough to show me around and take me out for runs. First I stayed at my friend Essi’s whom I had met two years ago when she was on an exchange year in Chicago.
She helped me organize a few different runs. First a sprint training with one of her friends which was technical and helped keep my mind in sprint shape. I also added a few 300m intervals for speed to fine tune my muscles and keep them firing quickly.
Then the next day her mom took me to a local race which was tons of fun and a bit of a confidence booster. (view above)
Afterwards I went over to visit my mom’s Finnish host family from when she was an exchange student. During that time I did a few light recovery jogs (It was really nice to just go for a relaxing jog versus intensive orienteering).
As my rest week finished up I rejoined the American Junior team for two pre-JWOC races which gave me my final insight for where I am currently orienteering-wise.
Throughout the first part of the race I was navigating really well. My compass bearings were reliable through the vague terrain and I was able to keep a decent flow while in the hilly technical portion. There was one reminder that I took away from the course; on the eighth control when someone started shouting at me and I lost focus which lead to several very dumb and large mistakes: I was reminded to run my race, that I know how to orienteer, and to tune out everything else.
Note: This was a long distance race
Going into the second race I reengaged my focus and was able to run hard the whole time. I only had a few small errors and was able to correct quickly each time that my focus started to go 🙂
Note: This was a non-forking mass start with the American Team
After a full day of traveling I arrived to our JWOC accommodations in Murikka last evening. I will do my best to make short updates every two or three days before and during JWOC.
I also wanted to thank all of my current supporters and encourage you to consider becoming one of my boosters on my RallyMe to help me afford and pay for JWOC this year. 8 days left!!
Thanks for reading 🙂
